NCAA Regional
May 26-27
In the 800m, sophomore David Groff (Centreville, Va.) was the top Green and Gold finisher, crossing the line 18th overall in 1:51.15. Junior Matt Warco (McMurray, Pa.) was 21st in 1:51.94, and sophomore Ryan Jones (Harrisburg, Pa.) crossed in 1:53.85. Senior Keith Bechtol (Alexandria, Va.) held the lead in the 5,000m race for a little under two laps in the evening’s nightcap, but finished out of the top-12 in 14:34.21. He is still a strong candidate to receive a bid to the NCAA Championships, however, as his provisionally-qualifying 10,000m time of 28:55.57 ranks 19th nationally among all collegians. Junior Ian Fitzgerald (Glenshaw, Pa.) also toughed out an exceptionally warm Florida evening to finish in 14:50.96. story continued full results

Senior Bonnie Meekins (Herndon, Va.) started the Tribe’s effort, tying for ninth in the high jump after clearing 5’ 7.25”. Ranked 20th nationally in the heptathlon after her school-record performance in winning the ECAC title (5,457 points), Meekins is all but assured of her first trip to the NCAA Championships, as the field normally consists of 24-27 heptathletes. Freshman Emily Anderson (Golf, Ill.) picked up yet another qualifying mark for the USAT&F Junior Nationals in the 1,500m, running 4:33.53 in the preliminaries of the 1,500m. While the time wasn’t able to advance her to tomorrow’s finals, it is the second-fastest time of the season for Anderson, coming behind the personal-best mark of 4:31.26 she set at the Colonial Relays. Senior Kate Willever (Pennington, N.J.) had her season draw to a close in the 3,000m steeplechase, running 11:25.62. The CAA Champion in the event, Willever ran a career-best time of 11:06.82 in April at the Lou Onesty Invitational. Freshman Nicole Kazuba (Chantilly, Va.) tied for 18th in the pole vault after clearing 12’ on her third attempt. Nine other athletes of the 19 who made the initial height of 12’ failed to achieve the next height, but finished ahead of Kazuba by clearing the bar on their first or second try. The height Kazuba was attempting, 12’ 6”, is fully 4.5 inches above the career-best she set in winning the CAA title.

Senior Joel Parker (Portsmouth, Va.) became the second Tribe harrier this year to break the 9-minute barrier in the 3,000m steeplechase, running 8:59.99 for 12th place and become eligible for an at-large berth at the NCAA Championships. The performance, which ranks Parker eighth all-time at W&M, is only the third time since 1996 that a Tribe runner has finished below nine minutes in a steeplechase. The other two athletes to accomplish that feat were also in this evening’s race. Junior Anthony Arena (Manassas, Va.), who ran 8:57 at this year’s Penn Relays and won the CAA crown back in April, took 17th in 9:05.01. Senior Sean Anastasia-Murphy (Gloucester, Mass.), who set a career-mark of 8:59.26 in 2005, finished an injury-marred season in 9:24.34. Also running in the steeplechase was junior Rob Dennis (Little Silver, N.J.), who crossed the finish line 9:43.19. Competing for the Tribe in the javelin throw was CAA Champion Alex Heacock (Lititz, Pa.), who finished his season by mustering a throw of 182’ 10”, good for 23rd.
