Men Move Up to 22nd in NCAA Poll
Coach Gibby (see interview from last week below) may not care about early season polls, but the men's team moved up one slot in the NCAA poll to 22. This rank puts the men behind UVA (12th) and NC State (13th) in the Southeast region. The women still are not in the top 30 while Southeast region rivals NC State (20th), Duke (26th) and North Carolina (28th) are in the ranking.

Anderson & Massam Are CAA Athletes of the Week
Emily Anderson (above) who finished fourth in the Inter-Regional Challenge and Ben Massam, who was victorious, were chosen as athletes of the week by the CAA. You can see them racing and their interviews below. More (Anderson) and More (Massam)

Interviews from Inter-Regional
Alex Ball just bought his video camera and is already at work with race coverage and interviews with both the men and women from the race earlier today.
Men First, Women Second at Inter-Regional
Running against former W&M coach Walt Drenth's Michigan State team, the men, who are ranked 23rd in the nation, won and while the women fell to the 8th ranked team in the country by a score of 19 to 42 with only All-American Emily Anderson breaking up their front five. Kayley Byrne finished in sixth-place with a time of 22:09.0, while Lynn Morelli came in seventh, Meghan Burns in 13th and Emily Arena finished in 14th. More The men had 3 in the top five with Ben Massam winning the race, followed by Colin Leak in second place with a time of 25:04.1 and Patterson Wilhelm came in fourth with a time of 25:09.5. Men Ranked 23rd Nationally
After eleven straight trips to the NCAA meet, the men are ranked 3rd in the Southeast behind NC State and UVA and 23rd in the US. Check back in a few days for an interview with the coaches about the outlook for the season.

Men 3rd, Arena 3rd at Lou Onesty Invite
The XC teams opened their 2008 seasons led by the third place finish by redshirt freshman Max Werner who placed 19th, finishing in 25:53.94. Sophomore Jay Bilsborrow ran second for the College, finishing 22nd in 25:56.33. Redshirt Freshman Chris Tyson placed 25th (26:05.34) just ahead of senior Bryce Wilk (26th, 26:06.44). Sophomore Robert Sagar finished 31st in 26:16.09, while classmate Skeeter Morris came in 52nd, finishing in 27:47.53. More

Emily Arena (pictured above) paced the Tribe finishing fifth in 18:47.04 (and thus earned CAA runner of the week honors), while freshman Heather Beichner placed seventh (19:27.82) in her first collegiate race. Virginia’s Lauretta Dezubay won the event, finishing in a time of 17:55.01. Juniors Ariel Burbey (19:47.35) and Kelly McElroy (19:50.69) had solid races for the Green and Gold in spite of the porous conditions, finishing in 11th and 12th respectively. Classmate Sallie Ford finished 14th in 19:56.92, while freshmen Kristen Dietz (17th, 20:22.95) and Brittany Sevachko (20:32.43) rounded out the Tribe runners. More

Anthony Arena '07 Races Mountain Trail Race
Talk about a challenge. Arena ran the Imogene Pass Run which is a 17.1 mile point-to-point mountain race within the western San Juan mountains of Colorado, run along a route which connects the towns of Ouray (7810 ft.) and Telluride (8820 ft.) by way of 13,120 foot Imogene Pass. He finished 24th overall and first in his age group.

New Recruits for the Women's Team
  • Heather Beichner: 2006 and 2007 NCHSAA 2A State Champion in cross country .Three-time state champion in the 1,600m 2008 800m state champion 2007 1,000m indoor state champion
  • Kristen Dietz: Was named all-district all four years in cross country MVP of the track team in 2006 and 2008 Broke the school’s mile record in 2008
  • Amelia Emerson: Named All-District and All-Region in 2005, 2006, and 2007 Named All-State in cross country in 2006 and 2007 District champion in the 800m run in 2006
  • Hannah Johnston: Member of 2005 Southern Maine Athletic Association Regional runner-up team
  • Brittany Sevachko: Three-time Nike Indoor Championships All-American Four-time All-State in indoor track and three-time All-State in outdoor track . Four-time All-District and four-time All-District in indoor track Three-time All-Region and three-time All-District in outdoor track NSIC Academic All-American in 2008 Honorable mention in the Washington Post for both indoor and outdoor track in 2008.

Cross Country Time Is Here
Will the men's team make it to the NCAA meet for the 12th year in a row? Will the young and very strong women's team make it back after a long absence? Today we start with the new recruits for the men's team to be followed shortly by the women. Also Alex Ball (who is a field events junior) will be providing video interviews this season starting with one with Gibby and Kathy later this week. So here are the new recruits and their accomplishments:

  • Alex McGrath: New England Champ at 3200m/NH XC and 3200 ChampHas run 908.6 for 3200m
  • Peter Dorrell: Has run 153.10/2:28.59/4:11.62/8:58.30, a nince time State AA Champion
  • Zach Gates: 4th at Indiana State Meet in XC and 3200, has run 4:18 and 9:11
  • Liam Anastasia-Murphy: State runner-Up at 1000m and 800m, has run 1:54.9/2:30.25/4:21.24
  • John Pence: two time All-State at 3200/ Has run 9:17 for 3200m
  • David Adley: has run 4:16.63/1:55 on relay/8:50.55 for 3000m, was WPIAL Champ in XC/All-State at 1600m
  • Jon Grey (Transfer): from University of Oklahoma, 17th at NCAA MW Regional/32nd at Big 12 Champs/14:44.02 for 5000m

Finally the coaches just selected the MVP award winners for the 2008 track season and they are:
