Frey - 14th at the Utica Boilermaker 15K
Jacob wrote this blog about his race this past weekend and his final tune-up for the Pan-Am games. The previous I week I had run 150 miles and to say the least I was not expecting much. Its and odd feeling to have a heart that visibly beats through a couple shirts, and still be so tired you get passed by the fat girl going up a couple flights of stairs. I made the trip up to good ole Utica New York for the Boilermaker 15k with Michelle Lilienthal. Read more

Utica seems to be economically, and emotionally depressed for 364 days a year, and the day of the Boilermaker 15k the town lives like a rock star. On my pre race day run (first day below 20 miles in a few weeks), saying a felt bad would be an understatement..but found some sweet trails. The rest of the day was spent people watching in the local Walmart Super Store, catching up with my old Hanson (olympic development program in michigan I used to be on) buddies, and touring the course for the next day.

After an early dinner, the dorms where they housed the elites were far from appealing, and Michelle and I drove up into the mountain to get away from the granola bars, race bibs, and running gossip. I found what I thought was an awesome view spot to chill out and forget about the race, but a local toothless goon did not share the same opinion. Some mouth breathing stooge blocked us in with his pickup truck, informed us he had called the cops because we were "criminal trespassers," and blew billows of smoke in our face from a black cigarette. After unleashing the law school knowledge on the tort of trespass, we tamed the beast and headed back for homebase. Typically, I slept very little the night before the race.

With somewhat hot temperatures, and a wicked tough first 4 miles I lay off the quick early pace, and dragged Chad Johnson of the Hansons up and down the hills. My legs were still quite tired, but I found that as the race progessed my body was coming together. We caught Clint Verran of the Hansons around 6, passed a couple of the Kenyans around 7, and I pulled away from Chad around 6.5. I decided to save the "Frey Speed" (total breakdown in form sprinting) for the Pan Am marathon, as the weapon should be used sparingly. I finished as the second American, but if I had another 200 meters would have caught the first. All in all much better than expected. I rehydrated at the best post race party ive ever been to with several Saranac Wheat Ale brews.. delicious.

An uneventful drive back to philly, an early morning run, and Ive started what hopefully will be my last week (gibby please) of anything close to high mileage. 18 days to go and counting!
