Go here on Saturday for the race results.  The men are at 10 and the women at 11.  Look for the men to field only a small part of their top seven as they gear up for the national qualifying race in two weeks.

W&M Women's First Cross Country Team
Now that W&M's women have been to the NCAA meet a number of times and had a number of All-Americans, it is hard to believe that the first team started in 1977 and was coached by Randy Hawthorne (with help from Baxter Berryhill). Listen here for my interview with Randy and come back in a few days for some pictures. The sound gets better about 30 seconds into the interview. Above are some of the earliest members of the women's xc team from 1977: Laura Sardo Fleming Jeanne Hopke and Joy Kelly Stiles.

Many New Polls
Okay, let's see if I can get this straight. The USCCCA Association agrees with Letsrun.com and ranked the men's team 9th in the US in their rankings that came out today. The men are also ranked 1st in the region. The women are unranked nationally and are 5th in our region.

Letsrun.com Ranks Men #9
The rather well visited site, LetsRun.com today ranked the men 9th in the US (still waiting for their women's poll). Ranked #1 was Oklahoma and #3 was NAU which was only 7 points ahead of the men's team at the Jamboree meet. W&M has had several teams in the top 10 at the NCAA meet including a high of 4th in 1973. The pre-national meet in two weeks will tell if this ranking can continue further in the season. A week ago the coaches' association ranked the team 13th.

The men are on top and below is the women's race from yesterday. (note the men's race will say "5K," but it is the 8K)

Men 2nd and Women 3rd at OSU Invitational
Both teams put together a great race at the OSU Invitational with the men beating #2OSU (albeit without their #1 and 2 runners). The men also came close (7 pts.) to NSU that is ranked #5 in the nation. The spread between 1 and 5 was under 30 seconds with Jon Grey leading the charge followed by Wilhelm Patterson and Colin Leak. More

The women were more spread out, but Emily Anderson showed the strength she gained from running 5Ks in the spring finishing 11th overall followed by Kayley Byrne and Meghan Burns in 20th and 23rd. Even more importantly the women beat the #15th team in the US and are hopefully thinking of going back to the NCAA meet for the first time in many years. More
