Stimson Retires (sort of!)

If you attended the Colonial Relays' reunion you already know that Dan Stimson is stepping down from a paid coaching position.  I saw paid as he intends to keep coaching as a volunteer, but W&M is actively looking for a replacement.  I graduated in 1986 and remember the day that Dan interviewed as he then drove my coach, Roy Chernock, and myself to the airport where we all flew to the Penn Relays.  Stimson has been a tremendous asset for W&M ever since and, if memory serves, the longest lasting coach in track history.  Here is the retirement announcement. There is a party for Dan on the 7th of June at the Hawthorne's and if you can come, please e-mail Shelby (or me for her e-mail).

W&M at Boston

I should add that Sue Haynie '89 and John Kellogg '84 ran 2:51 and 3:15 at Boston today.   Amazing to think how well they are still running.  Both John (steeple) and Sue (5K) are still on the top ten all-time lists.  The photo above was just taken a few hours ago.

W&M Interview of Meb Keflezighi

My senior roommate, Scott Douglas '86, has carved a great career in writing as a senior editor for Running Times and Runner's World).  Above is one example of his great work as today he had a great one on one interview with Boston Marathon champ Meb Keflezighi.

Stites Run 32:41

I have been on vacation so am a bit behind, but that does not mean there is not information to report as Emily Stites and Elaina Balouris are at it again.  This time Stites knocked off 90 and all the way down to 32:41 which is the 3rd fastest NCAA time this year.  Balouris also ran extremely well with a PR in 33:31 which ranks her 14th in the NCAA.  She is also ranked 9th in the NCAA in the 5K.   More

Friend-Uhl Still Amazes

Back in 1992 Sonja Friend (now Friend-Uhl) set the 800 meter school record in 2:09.89.  What is more remarkable is that at age 43 she just ran 2:11.58 at the Mt SAC Relays.  If you have Flotrack Pro, you can see the race here.

Balouris Story in the Flat Hat

Here is a nice piece on senior Elaina Balouris who is in her senior season at W&M with five All-American titles, she is hoping for a 6th in the 5 or 10K (which is running in two weeks).
