W&M's Best Ever Cross Country Team (as they looked in 1973 and when they were enshrined into the W&M Hall of Fame).
Five W&M XC teams have finished in the top ten at the NCAA meet, last year’s 8th place team, 2000 (10th), 1997 (9th), 1970 (10th) and the 1973 team that finished 4th. With the men aiming for a second straight top ten finish, I thought it might be interesting to look at the best W&M team of all time – the 1973 team that has long been enshrined in the W&M Hall of Fame. Will the Men's XC Team Make it 12 Straight?
The men's team returns four of its seven competitors from last year’s NCAA squad, including two-time All-American Christo Landry (Falls Church, Va.), who will try to join Matt Lane ’01 as the Tribe’s only three-time All-Americans in cross country. Coach Gibby has also done a fine job recruiting his new class (click here for the list and their accomplishments) of harriers. This depth and the long tradition of distance excellence should mean the team will be looking to go to the NCAA's for the 12th straight time and perhaps improve on their 8th place performance of 2007. Will the XC Women Return to the NCAA Meet?
The Tribe returns four of its six All-CAA runners from last season, including senior Emily Gousen (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore Anna Brousell (Wilmington, Del.), who both earned All-East honors at the ECAC championships in addition to their top-10 billing at the CAA Championships. Coach Newberry has also recruited a stellar class of harriers who will add great depth (click here to see their names and accomplishments). With such a strong returning team, the women are surely hoping to return to the NCAA meet for the first time since 2005. Read more
