ECAC & IC4A Qualifications Led Meet At Navy

Some things never change. Way back in the 80s when I was in school we too went to the Navy (back then it was a tri meet) and all these years later the team is still traveling to it. Leading the way for the women was Elaina Balouris who finished second in the mile in 4:55 and is now #10 on the all time list. Frosh Sarah Katz finished second in the 400 m. in 59.27 good enough for 5th all-time. At the GMU meet Natalie Baird through 50-8 to finish 2nd and move to 10th all-time for W&M. More

On the men's side, six athletes and the DMR qualified for the IC4A meet. Leading the way was Ben Katz who long jumped 23-8.75 for 4th all-time indoors. Also qualifying for the IC4A meet was Josh Hardin, Alex McGrath and Rad Gunzenhauser in 14:25, 31 and 34 in the 5K. Also earning the IC4A trip in the 3K were John Muller and Joshua Mercado in 8:20 and 24 respectively. Volunteer Coach Kepler Finished 2nd at US Open

Janice Keppler, who is a volunteer coach at W&M, finished second in the pole vault at the US Open juming 14'6". That mark gets her in the US Indoor Championships and provisionally qualifies her for the Olympic Trials where former W&M athletes Christo Landry and Ed Moran have already qualified in the distrance races. CNU Invitational

The women's 4x400 meter team qualified for the ECAC and placed first while Nicole Dory (triple jump tying for 5th all time W&M), Olivia Harding (1000 meters) also claimed victories at the CNU Invitational. More

The William and Mary men's track and field team competed Friday and Saturday at the CNU Captain's Invitational, coming away with two wins, five all-time performances, and one IC4A qualification over the 36 hours of competition. Matt Clark moved to #4 all time in the 60 hurdles, while Ben Katz tied the career-high he set one week ago in the high jump, clearing the bar at an IC4A-qualifying height of 2.05 meters (6-8.75) on Friday night to finish in a tie for first place.

Since 1996, only five teams have gone every year to the NCAA XC Championships. Two of those teams, Arkansas and W&M will not be going this year as the official list was just released by the NCAA. It has been an amazing run and we all look forward to a new streak starting next fall.

Flotrack Predicts Men Won't Go to NCAA

The men's team will not go to the NCAA meet according to Flotrack. If this is correct, it would be the first time since the 1996 meet that they were not there. The NCAA will release its official list tonight.

Women and Balouris Both 9th

Sophomore Elaina Balouriss finished 9th as did the team at the Southeast Regional meet. Unfortunately that means the team is done, but we'll have to wait to see about Boularis.

Men Third, Now Must Wait Until Monday for NCAA Bid

The men had a great showing at the Southeast Regional Championships and now must wait until Monday to see if they will go to the NCAA meet for the 15th straight time. They finished third behind NC State and Eastern Kentucky with Alex McGrath finishing 10th in 30:20 and their fifth man, Tom Burke in 31:18 for a :58 spread. The first two teams earn automatic team births to the NCAA. If you can't wait until Monday for the results, go here at 8 PM central time to see Flotrack's live prediction show. Ed Moran had a very successful debut finishing in 2:11.46 which was good enough for 10th at the NYCity Marathon (post race interview above). Now he is onto his wedding next weekend and then to training for the Olympic Track and Field trials next summer.

Sorry to be late on this one, but I just got back from an Internet free three days in Bermuda! The men beat several teams that had been ranked in the top 30 in the US, but nonetheless finished 27th in the Wisconsin invite. All five men finished within 22 seconds of each other, but obviously the pack needs to move up.

As usual Elaina Boulairs finished first for the tribe as the women's team finished 39th overall. Twenty-one teams were ranked in the top 30 in the US.

Bechtol Wins San Fran 1/2 Marathon

Keith Bechtol '07, who is one of only four W&M runners to run under 29 minutes in the 10K and is currently a graduate student at Stanford ran 1:05 to win the San Francisco Half Marathon a year after winning the entire distance. He is training for the Olympic Trials Marathon.

Mattis Makes Sports Illustrated/Kellogg Shines at USA Master's

Sam Mattis, son of Marlon '85 (#3 all-time in the hammer) just made Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd." Meanwhile John Kellogg '84 ran 11:52 to become the runner-up in the USATF Master's Championships in the steeple for 45-49 year olds. Kellogg who is still number five on the all time list had not been over a jump in 20 years! Now that is a picture I wish we had!

Scott Douglas '86 Interviewed by Runner's World

Gillespie and Bechtol Qualify for Marathon Trials

Chas Gillespie who graduated from Harvard in '10 and was a grad student and the leading W&M XC man this past fall qualified for the US marathon trials next January. Gillespie narrowly reached his goal with a 1:04.56 just getting under the 1:05 qualifying standard.

In the same race, Keith Bechtol '07, also qualified for the trials with a 2:16. Bechtol is one of four W&M runners to go under 29 in the 10K.

Ranjan Sirha

I well remember taking Ranjan Sinha around campus on Colonials' weekend of 1986 when we were trying to recruit him. He ended up running some very nice 800 meter races, then going to grad school at Stanford and afterwards living in many different places around the world working for the high tech industry. So it is with very heavy heart that I am writing that he died of an accident in his apartment in Thailand. There will be a memorial service in his hometown of Bernardville, NJ at the Vine Restaurant from 6-9 pm on July 16th.

William and Mary will have seven men and one women competing at the first round hosted by Indiana University starting Thursday May 26^th.

On the men’s side, Brian Sklodowski qualified in the 1500m with a time of 3:44.39 which ranks him 12^th on the East descending order lists of qualifiers. Lewis Woodard qualified for the 5000m with a time of 14:02.75 which ranks him 27^th. Liam Anastasia-Murphy qualified in the steeple with a time of 9:01.68 which ranks him 45^th. In the 10k William and Mary will have four athletes. Josh Hardin ranked 26^th with a qualifying time of 29:49.39, Jon Grey ranked 34^th with a qualifying time of 29:56.18, Ben Massam ranked 39^th with a qualifying time of 29:59.08 and Alex McGrath ranked 41^st with a qualifying time of 30:01.27.

One the women’s side Freshman Elaina Balouris qualified for the 5000m with a time of 16:22.05 with a rank of 20^th overall.

IC4A/ECAC

The men finished 15th and the women 26th respectively in the IC4A and ECAC Championships this past weekend. Leading the charge was Brandon Heroux who won the IC4A title Sunday afternoon at the IC4A Men's Track and Field Championships at Princeton. Liam Anastasia-Murphy blazed to a season-best time of 9:01.68 in the steeplechase to earn All-East honors and place sixth while Lewis Woodard ran the second-fastest race of his career to finish third in 14:02.75 and take All-East honors.

Leading the way for the women were Betsy Graney who finished fourth in a season-best time of 10:41.80 in the steeplechase to earn her fourth All-East award in the event. In the 10,000m run Sara Lasker took the bronze medal with a personal-best 35:57.90, finishing just eight seconds behind the leader. Her second All-East award came on the heels of a runner-up performance at the CAA Championships last week, and ranks her 10th in school history.

Christo Landry '10 was a 13:53 5K runner and multi All-American at W&M (13th at XC NCAA). But on Sunday evening he ran ([perhaps his first 10K) in 28:30 which makes him the 3rd fastest person ever to go to W&M and has run a 10K.

Mattis Breaks Penn Relays Record

While Marlon Mattis '85 is still #2 on the W&M hammer throw list (but more importantly used to use his index finger to spot me when I would lift each week!), it's looking more and more like his son Sam (on right in the pic) will eclipse him in college as he broke the discus Penn record (201'2"), and still got beat. Right now he is #3 in the US and #1 for 16/17 year olds.

Three 10K Runners Under 30:01

Great Marks at Mt Sac

Brandon Heroux (Westfield, N.J.) won his flight at the Mt. Sac Relays and placed eighth overall with a school-record throw of 69.86 meters (229-2). His effort broke his own previous best (also the old record) of 69.33m (227-5) set at the 2009 CAA Championships, and qualifies him to the IC4A Championship while ranking 21st in the nation. Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.) , who ran 29:49.39 in his first-ever 10,000m race to take 17th. His time ranks him 12th in school history, and 16th in the East so far this season. Senior Ben Massam (Chatham, N.J.) was 21st in 29:59.08, to become the 14th-fastest athlete ever at W&M, and Alex McGrath (Marlborough, N.H.) was right behind him 30:01.27, ranking 15th in school history. On the Division I East charts so far this season, the two rank 17th and 18th, respectively.

American Record Holder Sonja Friend-Uhl

As you can see from a few posts ago, Sonja Friend Uhl who graduated in 93, just set a new American record in the master's 1500. With nationals and worlds not set until July, she has a long season ahead of her and plenty of time to get her record even faster. Sonja's new record is a 4:27 and she ran 4:22 as a 39 year old and has a 4:13 PR. I am not sure why the sound is off a bit, but perhaps we'll get another interview after she runs at nationals. GMU Invitational

Leading the way for W&M at GMU was Dan Klatzkin the shot put who earned the first of his two silver medals with a personal-record showing. He put the shot an even 15 meters (49-2.5) for the first time ever, surpassing his previous best by nearly five inches. Klatzkin also was second in the discus, throwing for 45.19m (148-3). Freshman Matt Renn (Annandale, Va.) also finished in the top-10, throwing a personal-best 36.85m (120-11) for eighth place. More on the men

The women were led by Alyssa Gaeto who had a personal-best leap in the triple jump of 11.12 meters (36-5.75) to tie Jessica Unger '98 for eighth all-time in school history. She also competed in the long jump, taking ninth on the day with a leap of 5.17m (16-11.5). More on the women.

As many of you know, Matt Lane and Roy Chernock were inducted into the Hall of Fame this past weekend. Here are their bios along with the other people who are being entered this weekend.

Friend Sets American Record

Sonja Friend-Uhl '93 ran 4:29 at W&M and 4:22 later in her career. Just turned 40, with a full time job and two kids, she just set the American record in the master's 1500 meters at 4:27 (in addition to recently running a 2:09).

Colonials

Here are more results from Colonials. It was a bit cold and windy, but nonetheless wonderful to see it in person. In the women’s meet, Freshman Kathleen Lautzenheiser set a new Freshman record in the 5000m with a time of 16:43.58 which current ranks her 25^th in the NCAA East Region. Also in the 1500m, Freshman Elaina Balouris finished 13^th with a time of 4:31.71, which lowers her personal best.

In the men’s meet, Junior Brandon Heroux won the Javelin with a throw of 67.55 (221-07). Brandon is currently ranked 10^th in the NCAA East Region. William and Mary also had a strong showing in the men’s 5000m with four guys finishing in the top-10. Red-Shirt Freshman Josh Hardin led the way for the Tribe placing 6^th overall with a time of 14:18.82, Sophomore Alex McGrath was 7^th in a time of 14:20.90, Freshman Ted Richardson was 8^th in a time of 14:22.66 and Sophomore John Muller was 9^th in a time of 14:23.32. I'll be a little slow this weekend on the updates for Colonials since I'm walking around having a great time with my fellow alums here. Nonetheless, there were some great races yesterday with 7 qualifying for the IC4A meet. More

Two Invitationals

This past weekend the William and Mary Track and Field Team traveled in two different directions to reach some top performances. A few members of the Women’s Track and Field Team traveled to Raleigh Relays to race a 10k and a small number of men and women traveled to Richmond for the Fred Hardy Invitational with many of the members of the Tribe training thru the weekend for the Colonial Relays scheduled for next weekend.

At the Raleigh Relays, Senior Kelsey Budd and Junior Sara Lasker traveled south for a fast 10k. Both athletes raced strong hitting the 5k mark in 18:20. Kelsey Budd pulled away from Sara with less than 1000m left to finished 9^th overall and in a Personal Best time of 36:29.89, which qualifies her for the ECAC Championships. Sara Lasker was close behind in 12^th with a personal best of her own of 36:37.27 and also qualifying for the ECAC Championships which will be held at Princeton University in May.

At the Richmond Fred Hardy Invitational Sophomore Melissa DiVecchia finished 8^th overall in the 3000m in a new Personal Best of 10:12.40 with Junior Kristen Dietz finished in 10^th with a personal best of her own of 10:14.45. In the men’s meet, William and Mary was represented well by the throwers with Junior Brandon Heroux setting a meet record of 69.17m in the Javelin which is the second best throw all time by Brandon. Senior Zach Jordan continued his winning ways with a first place finish in the Hammer with a throw of 55.48m and Senior Dan Klatzkin finished 2^nd in the Discus with a throw of 46.02m.

Up next for the Tribe will be the Colonial Relays on Thursday – Saturday March 30-April 2^nd.

IC4A/ECAC

I must say that it is great to have a nice looking format for the W&M Tribeathletics page FINALLY. You can see there that W&M had two (Lewis Woodward and Alex McGrath both run 8:16) earn All-East in the 3K and Zach Jordan who earned his All-East title by finishing 7th in the weight throw. Go here for the other men's results. The highest finish came from Chas Gillespie who was third in the 5K in 14:01.

For the women, Elaina Boularis was 7th in 9:37 setting a new frosh record while Nicole Dory just missed the All-East distinction finishing in 9th in the pole vault. More on women

Scott Douglas '86 on TV

One of my roommates, Scott Douglas '86 has made a nice career in running by writing a number of books with 80s Olympians Bill Rodgers and Pete Pfitzinger (a former training partner of mine). He is a former editor of Running Times and now a senior editor for them. Above is a TV appearance he made yesterday to hawk his The Complete Idiot's Guide to Running that he co-wrote with Bill Rodgers.

Leak 3rd, Newberry 6th at NACAC XC Meet

Colin Leak '10 and former coach/runner Kathy Newberry were 3rd and 6th in their respective races in Trindad at the NACAC XC meet.

10 Qualify for IC4A/ECAC Meet

John Muller qualified for the IC4A mile by running 4:14.46, a personal-best by over three seconds while Zach Jordan cracked the IC4A qualifying standard in the 35-lbs weight throw with a throw of 17.53 meters (57-6.25). In the 3000 meters
the four Tribe harriers running took the first four positions with career-best and IC4A-qualifying times. Alex McGrath ran 8:18.06 for the win and a 13-second personal-best, while grad student Lewis Woodard was second in 8:21.26, over three seconds faster than his previous best. Rad Gunzenhauser ran 8:22.37 and Ted Richardson finished fourth in 8:24.68.

In the 3,000m, freshman Elaina Balouris (above) ran 9:47.89 to win the event and qualify for the ECAC Championships followed by Kathleen Lautzenheiser who shaved almost 10 seconds off of her previous-best to run 9:50.04 and take second. Lautzenheiser also came in under the ECAC barrier, her first championship qualification. In the pole vault, freshman Nicole Dory continued her strong rookie campaign by taking fifth with a height of 3.35 meters (10-11.75).

CNU Invitational

In the women’s meet, Elaina Balouris won the mile in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:58.77 with Kathleen Lautzenheiser finishing 4th in 5:00.92. William and Mary finished first and second in the Distance Medley with times of 12:29.33 and 12:31.47. The first place team consisted of Kathleen Lautzenheiser (3:39.9), Katie Buenaga (65.4), Cara Janeczko (2:27.8), Melissa DiVecchia (5:16.1) and the second place team consisted of Elaine Balouris (3:39.9), Avery Mattingly (62.0), Lauren Strapp (2:27.5), and Lanie Smith (5:21.0). In the field events, Senior Emily Jeremiah was 3rd in the Pole Vault with a jump of 3.45m. Natalie Baird, who is redshirting this season, won the shot put in 13.01m. More

In the men’s meet, Tyler Jones led the 3000m from start to finish in 8:44.17. A Distance Medley Team of Brain Sklodowski (3:09.0), Matt Clark 54.0), Liam Anastasia-Murphy (1:55.16) and Alex McGrath (4:14.9) finished first with a time of 10:14.27 which is an IC4A qualifying time. In the Field events, Zach Jordan won the weight throw in a throw of 16.62m and Dan Klatzkin was 4th in the shot put with a throw of 13.93m. More

Moran 3rd, Leak + Newberry Both 13th in USA XC Race

I could be wrong, but Ed Moran's 3rd today, I believe, is his best ever in the world qualifying race. Colin Leak '10(thanks for the heads up from Ed Moran) was 13th in the race as well. Just earlier, Kathy Newberry was 13th in the women's race - missing out on making the USA team. Above is the men's finish. Here are the complete videos for both races.

Chernock's Car!

For those of you who were at W&M between 1978-1992, you might remember going on distance runs and chasing the plates pictured above hoping Chernock would stop soon and give you a water break in the dog days of August. Now he and Matt Lane '00 will be inducted in the Hall of Fame at our reunion on the 2nd of April (see details below). The smelly shoes pictured above belonged to Hiram Cuevas '89.

Alumni Reunion 2011

Lt. Todd Weaver

Junior Brandon Heroux started a website to honor Lt. Todd Weaver '08 who recently died while fighting in Iraq. He and some other athletes are trying to raise money for Lt. Weaver's family. You can find more information here.

Lots of IC4A/ECAC Qualifiers at Navy and GMU Meets

Leading the men's qualifiers were Alex McGrath who ran 14:39 to qualify for the IC4A 5K. Joining him will be Tom Burke and Lewis Woodward who ran 8:22 and 8:24 in the 3K. Liam Anastasia-Murphy and Brian Sklodowski also qualified for the IC4A meet with a 4:13 and 4:14 marks in the mile. While not qualifying, another notable race also included top ten all time W&M performances by Matt Clark who ran 8.37 in the for the 60m hurdles. More

At GMU, Betsy Graney qualified for the ECAC meet with a 4:55 in the mile while Emily Jeremiah and Nicol Dory both qualified in the pole vault with identical marks of 3.60 meters with the latter breaking her own frosh record for the third time. Also qualifying for the ECAC meet was the distance medley relay which ran 12:06 with Graney, frosh Elaine Boularis, Olivia Harding and Avery Mattingly. More

Juris Luzins in 4:00.1

When I first qualified for the NCAA meet, a bunch of alums went and watched us at the meet. One of them was W&M's best ever 800 yard runner (and his time would still beat every 800 meter runner - 1:45.91 is his conversion to meters). As someone who lacked any noticeable speed I was enthralled meeting him. Here is a great race where he is 4th in 4:00.1 to Marty Liquori who won and Prefontaine who was second. Thanks to John Malone '81 who pasted it on his Facebook page.

Hoya Invitational

The men's and women's teams returned to action in a limited fashion this weekend.

Junior Matt Clark finished first at the Hoya Invitational in the 60m hurdles, tying his career-best with a time of 8.42 seconds for the win. Clark's time ranks him third in school history in the event. Senior Dan Klazkin also notched a victory for the men in putting the shot 13.94 meters. More on the men

For the women, Betsy Graney finished 4th in the 3K in 9:57 qualifying herself for the ECAC meet. Nicole Drory broke her own frosh pole vault record in winning the event. More on the women

Thanks to the quickness of the Internet, I no longer subscribe to T&F News, so thanks to Shelby Hawthorne for the update that Ed Moran ranked 5^th in 2010 in the 5K and 10^th in the 10K and Kathy Newberry 10^th in the marathon.

Moran 15th in International XC

Ed Moran finished 15th at the Bupa Great Edinburgh XC race running in 26:38 in what was a snowy and apparently very tactical (re: slow) 8K race. Check out this video to see how much snow was on the course.
