Great Interview & Article with/About Ed Moran
Twenty years ago this week, I ran in the finals of the Trials 10K, so I have a special appreciation and admiration for Coach Moran, who has a very good shot at making the team in my former speciality. Click here for a rather lenghty interview with Moran that ran in April and here for an article from a few days ago. Here is an article from Monday on Moran.
Newberry 23rd in Trials 10K
Starting off the trials for W&M's trio of entrants was Coach Kathy Newberry who finished 23rd in the 10K in 34:34.2. You can read more about Kathy's expectations by clicking here to see an article on her. Click here to see the 10K. Finally go here if you want to see real time feed from NBC each night of the Trials. Article on Anderson on NCAA and Trials
If you had told Emily Anderson that she would run 4 minutes and 14.73 seconds for 1,500 meters as a sophomore, she wouldn’t have believed you.“My goal for the season was to make nationals,” Anderson, a sophomore distance runner for William and Mary, said. “In the back of my mind I thought it would be really cool to be an All-American.” More

Olympic Trials Competition and TV Schedule
The Trials begin in Eugene in a week and coaches Ed Moran, Kathy Newberry and sophomore Emily Anderson will be competing. Assuming Anderson makes the semis, all of them will be on television, albeit some of it in the wee hours. Moran is the 4th fastest 10K runner, Newberry the 13th fastest 10K entrant and Anderson is 19th in the 1500 meters. One will have to meet the "A" standard and finish in the top three to make the team.
W&M Prize Recruit 3rd at Nike Nationals
Park View senior Natalie Baird stood on the Nike Outdoor Nationals winner's stand Friday and accepted a medal -- but not the one she's used to receiving in Virginia.
Baird, who never lost to a Washington area competitor in the discus, took home a bronze medal in the event at North Carolina A&T University's Irwin Bell Track and Field Complex. Earlier in the day, the All-Met outdoor track athlete of the year placed seventh in hammer throw. More

Article on Pat Cousins '86
Pat and I were on the team at the same time. He ran the 100/200 meters (and is still #10 on the 100 list) and applied and was accepted to the U. of Florida Law School during our senior year. Now, not only does he have his own firm, but he is one of the musician Prince's lawyers and has donated very generously to the track team. Click here to read the alumni magazine article on him and here to see the U of Florida article. (Photo by Double Exposure Photography)

Graney Qualifies for World Junior Team
William and Mary freshman Betsy Graney punched her ticket for the IAAF World Junior Championships Friday evening, finishing second in the 3,000m steeplechase at the USAT&F Junior National Championships. Qualifying for the IAAF World Junior Championships will give Graney one more opportunity to add to an already-stellar freshman campaign. In addition to resetting the College’s freshman record in the steeplechase four different times and earning all-region honors, Graney also won gold at the Colonial Relays, silver at the CAA Championships, and bronze at the ECAC Championships. Emily Anderson ran the second-fastest 1,500m in school history Thursday night, advancing to Saturday’s finals at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.

Also a personal plug. One of my former training partners is an agent who started Kimbia which represents many top Kenyan and US athletes. One of my former teammates and roommates at W&M, Scott Douglas (who also was once the editor for Running Times and still writes articles for it and Runner's World), has a series of videos here looking at some of Wisconsin's post collegiates who now run for Kimbia. The vblog features many of their training methods. If you've never visited the site, there are also some great videos of Kenyans training in the Rift Valley.
